Students enrolling in Year 9 in 2022 have the choice of joining an innovation class or experiencing the single subject model of learning.  In innovation classes, students will experience project-based learning across a number of learning areas.  The focus will be on growing core learning dispositions and thinking skills.  


What is Innovation about?

At Ashburton College, we have been exploring ways to best prepare our students for their future beyond school.  The world is changing so quickly that many of our students will leave College to work in jobs that have not been invented yet.  As such, there is an increasing need for the curriculum to enable the growth of soft skills like collaboration and creativity with less of a focus on learning large amounts of subject content.

In 2019, we launched an Innovation Pilot Programme in Year 9.  All incoming Year 9 students had the choice of joining an innovation class or experiencing a single subject model of learning.  In the innovation classes, students engaged in project-based learning across a range of subject areas.   The teachers worked collaboratively to plan for the learning with a focus on growing core learning dispositions and thinking skills.

In 2020 and 2021, innovation classes have been offered in Year 10 as well as in Year 9.  Collaboration between teachers across multiple learning areas has increased to include, for several classes, all of the core subjects – English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education and Health. Learning within innovation classes is increasingly presented in unique contexts driven by student choice.

In 2022, students in Years 9 and 10 will have a choice between the innovation model or the single subject model of learning.   However, from 2023, all students in Years 9 and 10 will work in innovation classes and this programme will extend to include some classes in the senior school (Years 11 – 13).


Why choose an innovation class for 2022?

Being part of an Innovation class allows students to have greater input into the contexts for their learning.  Students are able to work collaboratively in areas of shared interest and inquiry.  This approach enhances student agency, personalises learning, and encourages the synthesis of authentic ideas to solve real problems.
