This course is an integrated English and Social Science course. Students that take Holocaust Studies will be able to gain literacy credits through a variety of English, History, Social Studies and Art History standards.

Learning Focus: What it means to be a responsible citizen
By undertaking this course students will examine basic moral issues and learn critical lessons in investigating human behaviour. Students will gain insight into the many historical, social, religious, political and economic factors that resulted in the Holocaust.
Students will come to understand that it is the responsibility of citizens in any society to learn to identify danger signals and to know when to react. The subject raises questions of fairness, justice, individual identity, peer pressure, conformity, indifference and obedience—issues that adolescents confront in their daily lives.
A large focus of the course will be on how this genocide was able to occur through the failure of people to resist or to protest. Students are also challenged to comprehend the magnitude of the Holocaust; and how so many people allowed this genocide to occur by failing either to resist or to protest.

- Presentation/discussion and speaking skills;
- Film Study;
- Study of written text (non-fiction/ fiction);
- Writing; and
- Resource interpretation.
This course leads to a University Entrance approved subject.
Potential field trip to Holocaust Centre of New Zealand (Wellington).
NB: If selecting this course you DO NOT need to select an English course also as it is integrated into this course.
