Course Description

This course is designed to give students an insight into the exciting opportunities relating to the Trades. It will run across two option lines and the assessment will be based on Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation (BCITO) Unit Standards in Wood, Graphics/Maths and Competnz (industry training organisation) Standards in Metal work. This course also includes work experience in a range of trades organisations.
Students that opt for Trades will have to complete three options in three different option lines. Trades Wood & Graphics, Trades Metal and Gateway for work experience. Entry onto the Trades course is by selection; an interview will be arranged. A maximum of 16 students will be selected.
Trades Wood - will require students to complete several skills-based projects. All units of work contribute to BCITO Unit Standards.
Trades Graphics gives students the opportunity to apply mathematical processes, sketching, formal drawings and interpreting working plans to trades situations. Students will then apply these skills to produce working drawings to build an outdoor project.
Trades Metal - Students will complete metal-based projects in engineering, All units of work contribute Competnz (industry training organisation) Unit Standards.
First aid, site safe, and Health and Safety course credentials will be completed through the Gateway course, as well as providing the work experience for the course out in the community with potential employers.
Recommended Prior Learning
None, but all applicants must be prepared to undertake an interview where their suitability for this programme is assessed.
This subject runs across two options with a third option line being Gateway course for students to complete work experience during the year.
