Year 10 Materials Technology: Product Design - Mechatronics

Course Overview:
The Mechatronics course is designed to provide students with an understanding of the integration of mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering. This hands-on course will cover the fundamentals of basic electronics, microprocessors, and programming. Students will engage in the research, creation, design, and evaluation of projects within a given theme, developing their problem-solving abilities both independently and in group settings.
Key Learning Areas:
- Basic Electronics:
- Understanding electrical components and circuits
- Analysing and designing simple electronic circuits
- Microprocessors and Programming:
- Introduction to microprocessors and their applications
- Programming fundamentals with a focus on embedded systems
- Developing and debugging programs using microcontroller platforms such as Arduino
- Project Research, Creation, Design, and Evaluation:
- Conducting research to support project development
- Evaluating based on feedback and testing
- Problem Solving:
- Collaborating with peers to develop innovative solutions
- Using analytical skills to troubleshoot and refine designs
- CAD (Computer-Aided Design) and CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) Systems:
- Hands-on experience with 3D printing, and laser cutting.
Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of the Mechatronics course, students will be able to:
- Understand and apply the fundamentals of basic electronics and microprocessors
- Develop and program embedded systems using microcontroller platforms
- Solve real would problems independently and collaboratively
- Utilise CAD and CAM systems to design and manufacture components
This course is ideal for students interested in pursuing careers in physis, engineering, robotics, automation, and related fields, providing a solid foundation and practical skills essential for success in the rapidly evolving field of mechatronics.
Contributions and Equipment/Stationery
Families/whānau can be charged for the cost of materials when they have agreed that item can be taken home. This cost will be advised at the start of the course.
Disclaimer
For NCEA Levels 1, 2 & 3 courses will be made up of a selection of the stated standards. This will happen at the beginning of the year with the assigned teacher.
